Blue man' dies after heart attack, stroke, A recluse who suffered from a rare condition that caused his skin to turn blue has died.

Paul Karason, 62, was admitted to a Washington hospital after he suffered a heart attack, according to the TODAY show.

He had also been battling pneumonia and had suffered a stroke.

Karason had previously appeared on the Today Show in America to reveal how his skin turned such a deep blue colour, and subsequently shot to internet fame.

He said he started drinking colloidal silver to treat a severe case of dermatitis about 15 years ago.

Karason started to develop dramatic symptoms of argyria, caused by exposure to silver.

His estranged wife, Jo Anna Karason, said “Papa Smurf” was a common nickname, but one he did not appreciate, depending on who was using it.

“If it was a kid who ran up to him... it would put a smile on his face, but if it was an adult, well …,” she told TODAY.

Karason was a heavy smoker and had undergone triple bypass surgery.

"He has been too ill to work for a while,” she added.

"He didn’t like to go out in public much - only when he thought he needed to, like to go to the bank or to pick up tobacco."
