TV's biggest stars
TV's biggest stars, The wait's finally over; the Fall TV season is under way. Time to find out how the small screen's most beloved characters rebounded from last season's cliffhangers and plot twists. But before you dive onto the sofa and into your favorite series, get to know a little more about the actors behind prime-time TV's biggest hits.

Julie Bowen

Show: "Modern Family"

Bowen has made herself at home on network TV throughout the 2000s — she's had roles on "Ed" and "Boston Legal." But it's her portrayal of uptight stay-at-home mom, Claire Dunphy , that's won her Critics' Choice, Emmy and SAG awards three years in a row .

Ty Burrell


Show: "Modern Family"


Burrell plays the goofy 'yin' to Julie Bowen's more serious 'yang.' As lovable doofus husband Phil Dunphy, he brings mirth into his hectic household . The Emmy-winning actor — and father of two little ones  — is making family-friendly fare for the big screen now, too.

Jim Caviezel

Show: "Person of Interest"

Caviezel held down steady acting gigs — including parts in "The Thin Red Line" and "Déjà Vu" — before his breakout role in a controversial Mel Gibson film. Since 2011, he has played an ex-CIA agent on a vigilante justice spree.

Jon Cryer

Show: "Two and a Half Men"

‘80s culture devotees will forever remember Cryer for his "Pretty In Pink" role . Today's fans know him for his Emmy-winning portrayal of on-edge chiropractor Alan Harper. He has stuck with the show despite constant on-set turmoil, and his loyalty paid off with a recent raise.


Kaley Cuoco
Show: "The Big Bang Theory"

Cuoco made a big splash playing John Ritter's teen daughter on "8 Simple Rules." Since 2007, she has played the lone non-nerd, Penny, on this top sitcom . Her impressive take-home landed her on Forbes' "Highest Paid TV Actresses" list last year.

Ted Danson

Show: "CSI"

Danson made sitcom history with his long-running, celebrated hit, "Cheers." He has never really left the TV screen, thanks to roles on "Damages," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Bored to Death." He put the jokes on hold and joined the CSI cast in 2011 .

Patrick Dempsey
Show: "Grey's Anatomy"

Dempsey has played "McDreamy" since the show debuted in 2005. In addition to playing a doctor on TV , he also has real-life ties to the medical world. Despite earning a whopping sum, Dempsey's future with "Grey's" is reportedly in question.

George Eads
Show: "CSI"

Aside from a short-lived run on a bygone soap opera, the crime series has been Eads' bread and butter. He plays forensics investigator Nick Stokes, one of the few characters to remain since the show's 2000 debut. The star recently celebrated his second wedding anniversary.

Michael Emerson

Show: "Person of Interest"

Emerson's good at spooking viewers. He kept "Lost" fans on the edge of their seats as Ben Linus and won an Emmy playing a serial killer on "The Practice." He now plays a mysterious billionaire on "Person of Interest" and he has been able to mix business with pleasure — his wife has had a recurring role.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Show: "Modern Family"

Ferguson plays a fussy attorney who's always ready to deliver an "I told you so" to his life partner . In July, the actor/fashion entrepreneur became a married man.

Nathan Fillion

Show: "Castle"

Fillion became a cult favorite thanks to a leading spot on "Firefly" and a fiendish role on TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." . Now, he plays a novelist-turned-crime fighter, a role that has won him raves.

Johnny Galecki

Show: "The Big Bang Theory"

Galecki — a former child star (his big break?) — went from playing a slacker on "Roseanne"  to playing a super genius on network TV's No. 1 comedy. Since his show's riding high, there's been buzz that Leonard wants a bigger payday.

Mark Harmon

Show: "NCIS"

After portraying a detective and a doctor during the 1990s, Harmon now plays a crime investigator on TV's top show . The actor/activist ranks as one of TV's highest-paid stars.

Taraji P. Henson

Show: "Person of Interest"

Henson's better-known for her Hollywood roles, including parts in "Hustle and Flow" and her acclaimed work in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Since 2011, she has found a home on the small screen, playing an NYPD detective. But she's not through with movies yet.

Angus T. Jones

Show: "Two and a Half Men"

Jones, who has played the titular "half" man for 10 years, has grown up before viewers' very eyes . The 19-year-old has had his fair share of growing pains and public tantrums lately.

Stana Katic

Show: "Castle"

Katic is Castle's leading lady. Before snagging the part, the Canadian-born actress had recurring roles on such series as "24" and "Heroes." The show's fans have been left wondering whether her character will choose a proposal from the title character or a job with the FBI .

Ashton Kutcher


Show: "Two and a Half Men"

Over the past few years, Kutcher has been in the news as much for his romances — past and present — as for his career . He's taken on Charlie Sheen's vacated spot  and has been dubbed the "highest-paid sitcom actor on TV."

LL Cool J

Show: "NCIS: Los Angeles"

The rapper-turned-actor put his signature physique to good use playing an ex-Navy SEAL on this NCIS off-shoot .

Lucy Liu

Show: "Elementary"

Liu first turned heads on "Ally McBeal" and then made the jump to film with the "Charlie's Angels" franchise, "Kill Bill" and this G-rated series. With "Elementary," she has flipped the script by playing a character who has traditionally been male. But the show nearly went on without her.

Johnny Lee Miller

Show: "Elementary"

This British actor has rebooted the character of detective extraordinaire Sherlock Holmes for CBS's hit crime show. Before the series hit the air, he was best-known for roles in "Trainspotting," "Dexter" and the ABC series "Eli Stone." He also has worked with the UK's "Sherlock" actor.

Chris O'Donnell

Show: "NCIS: Los Angeles"

O'Donnell's resume ranges from ‘90s superhero to a 2000s TV Romeo . On "NCIS: LA," he's in charge of an elite squad of crime-fighting agents. Last season, the actor took the lead in real life as well.

Jim Parsons

Show: "The Big Bang Theory"

Parsons has won two Emmys and a Golden Globe playing uber-nerd Sheldon , and he's in the running for the top funnyman spot at the 2013 Emmys . On the show, he has been paired off with former "Blossom" actress Mayim Bialik.

Ellen Pompeo

Show: "Grey's Anatomy"

Pompeo has led the cast of this medical drama since its 2005 debut and remains a crowd pleaser nine seasons later. Her character went from a flighty hospital newbie  to an attending physician who's juggling marriage and motherhood.

Tom Selleck

Show: "Blue Bloods"

Selleck can't seem to get enough of fighting crime. He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his iconic ‘80s private investigator role on "Magnum, P.I." He has played a police chief in the "Jesse Stone" TV movie series and is now a patriarchal police commissioner on this CBS series .

Elisabeth Shue

Show: "CSI"

Shue's best-known characters were polar opposites — a plucky teen in "Adventures in Babysitting"  and a doomed prostitute in "Leaving Las Vegas." In 2012, she joined the CSI team . Though she's on a TV hit, she hasn't abandoned Hollywood.

Sofia Vergara

Show: "Modern Family"

When Vergara isn't playing the show patriarch's feisty second wife , she's busy designing her own clothing line , filming ads for Pepsi and taking CoverGirl shots. Last year she topped the list of TV's highest-paid actresses.

Michael Weatherly

Show: "NCIS"

Before finding fame as Special Agent Tony DiNozzo , Weatherly was Jessica Alba's leading man — professionally and privately — on "Dark Angel." He has been on NCIS since its launch and is paid handsomely for it.
